Before I studied for an MA in Journalism, I did an art degree. I’ll be honest, I spent most of my degree either drunk, or watching telly in bed. But in my last year I decided to go all in for a First. After three long years of not really knowing what I was doing, I had finally figured out my own artistic ‘style’ and would spend all my time from 8am until 8pm in the studio.
I’ve always loved portraits and so I knew that this is what I wanted to create. But I decided to do them with a twist and instead of using traditional paint, I ended up painting with make up, fake tan and hair dye instead!
Here I am creating a giant wooden ‘canvas’ for me to work on. When painting with make up, actual canvas is the last thing you want to be using. It’s too rough and textured, making whatever cosmetics you’re working with an absolute nightmare to blend and paint with.
Here I am during one of my degree shows!
I’ve never been very good as posing for photos.
After a while of creating huge paintings I did get a little tired of having to make the wooden canvas’ myself, especially since they were super heavy and a nightmare to lug around the studios. So I started working on a much smaller scale, screen printing hundreds of baby faces before going wild and covering them in cosmetics.
I do miss sitting in front of the telly every night giving hundreds of babies tacky makeovers.
I had so many baby faces that I filled a corridor with them
Even celebrities weren’t safe when it came to my make up paintings. Here’s Macauley Culkin back when he was cute and before he started on the crack
I’ll leave you with a few other photos…
