While studying art at University, a teacher of mine handed me a giant box full of old magazines that he had accumulated over the years. As soon as I opened the box and saw the yellowing pages, and subtle sexism of 1950s magazine covers, I was oddly over the moon! I adore old things and love nothing more than getting my hands on things that no one else (or at least very few) people own and spent hours flicking through the magazines, admiring the gorgeous artwork and laughing at the scandalous stories.
I was pretty chuffed to get my hands on an old copy of Interview magazine and of course my initial thought was “How much is this worth?!” Sadly, despite being quite rare, it isn’t worth that much, but even if it was, I think I’d struggle to part with it anyway. If someone offered me a few hundred pounds for it, I’d probably find myself thinking “Why am I selling this, when it’s so sought after?”
Below are just a few photographs of some of the pages of the magazines. Some of the artwork and adverts are absolutely gorgeous and I think in a weird way, part of the reason I love them so much is that these are real people on the pages, real people that are old or probably dead now. Maybe that sounds a bit creepy, but these magazines give an insight into life all those years ago.
I haven’t done anything with my favourite pages just yet. I can’t bring myself to cut them up. At some point I should probably make some photocopies and frame them, but I just don’t think that photocopies will have quite the same effect.
